Turkmenistan has made significant progress with developing its agricultural sector since the beginning of 2021, Trend reports.
Turkmenistan's agriculture sector is driven mostly by production of wheat, cotton, rice, sugar, beet, fodder, vegetable and berry crops.
Also, more exotic crops are growing in the country, in particular banana, papaya and others.
Wheat production:
The wheat harvest will begin in Turkmenistan soon. In particular, wheat harvesting in the Akhal, Lebap and Mary regions will begin on June 4, and in the Balkan and Dashoguz regions - on June 11.
Cotton production:
The country plans to harvest 1.2 million tons of cotton, for which 620,000 hectares of land will be allocated in 2021. This year, cotton sowing has already begun in the Akhal, Balkan, and Lebap regions of Turkmenistan, while in the Mary region, sowing has already been completed. In particular, in the Mary region, cotton is planted on almost 180,000 hectares of land.
Turkmenistan also buys cotton fibers. In 2021, the country plans to purchase 145,557 tons of cotton fiber, 8,500 tons of fine-fiber cotton, 200 tons of short-fiber cotton and 200 tons of cotton wool. The country also conducts scientific work on the development of new varieties of cotton.
Onion and potato production:
In early May, the planting of onions and potatoes was completed in the Balkan region of Turkmenistan. Onions were sown on an area of 500 hectares, from which it is planned to harvest 12,500 tons. Potatoes were sown on 600 hectares, from which it is planned to harvest 8,400 tons. Meanwhile, in mid-April of this year, the planting of potatoes and onions was completed in the Dashoguz region.
Production of silk cocoons:
The farmers of the Gorogly district (Dashoguz region) of Turkmenistan started delivering of silkworm cocoons on June 2, 2021 to the government. In general, 80 tons of cocoons should be delivered from the district, and 500,000 tons in the region. Meanwhile more than 184 tons of silkworm cocoons will be produced in the Saparmurat Niyazov district of the Dashoguz region, in which, due to climatic conditions, this campaign started later than in other regions of the country.
In addition to the above-mentioned agricultural crops, the country also produces sugar beet, which is planned to be produced in the amount of 224,000 tons in 2021.
In general, Turkmenistan's farms increased vegetable production by 26.7 percent from January through April 2021 compared to the same period last year.
In January, the growth of vegetables stood at 31.9 percent, and in February it reached 41.7 percent.
Also, the production of fruits and berries increased by 4.6 percent, potatoes - by 0.7 percent in Turkmenistan from January through April.
Also, for the development of agriculture in the country, the permanent construction of factories and greenhouses is underway.
Greenhouse construction:
The Turkmen Daıhan Sarpasy company is building a greenhouse for growing exotic trees in the Akhal region of the country. Currently there are more than 100 modern greenhouses with a total area of 350 hectares in Turkmenistan.
In March of this year, 6 large greenhouses were opened at once, the total area of which was 35 hectares.
A plant for processing licorice root will be built in Turkmenistan. The plant will be built for the production of crude glycyrrhizic acid. It will operate under the Buyan agro-industrial complex in the Lebap region of Turkmenistan.
