Turkmenistan makes significant efforts in resilience to climate change - FAO

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 19

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

The Government of Turkmenistan makes significant efforts in order to increase the resilience to climate change, the FAO official told Trend.

The official noted that the National Programme on Socio-Economic Development of Turkmenistan for 2011-2030 serves as a basis for the long-term vision of the country’s development. It aims to accelerate growth with stronger institutions and policies, increased synergy between the public and private sectors, greater use of technology, and integration into the global economy.

Among others, improved management of agricultural lands, water and forest resources will play an important role in achieving these strategic goals.

"However, there are several risks standing in the way of achieving these goals, such as climate change impact. The Government of Turkmenistan makes significant efforts in order to increase the resilience: climate change mitigation and adaptation measures are included in the National Strategy of Turkmenistan on Climate Change (NSTCC), which is a major national document for the implementation of climate change activities," the official added.

In this regard, the official added, FAO is happy to support Turkmenistan in the development of their agricultural sector, since the country attaches great importance to this matter.

"The country’s agricultural sector is not only a major supplier of raw materials and food, but also the largest industry in terms of the numbers of the employed population. FAO support is focused on increasing agricultural productivity and maintaining resistance of ecosystems to external shocks, especially climate shocks," the FAO said.
