BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. The volume of pistachio harvested in Iran is expected to increase by 77 percent in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024), compared to last year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), an official of the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad Darioush Salempour said, Trend reports.

The official noted that more than 390,000 tons of pistachios are expected to be harvested from 550,000 hectares of orchards in the country this year.

Meanwhile, in the last Iranian year, 225,000 tons of pistachios were harvested from 424,000 hectares of orchards in Iran, Salempour also said.

“On average, 900 kg of pistachios are harvested from each hectare of orchard,” he added.

Salempour pointed out that taking into account climate changes and successive droughts in the world, there is a possibility of changing the locations of pistachio orchards in some regions of the country and planting pistachio orchards in other regions. In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad discussed conducting research on transporting water from the Gulf of Oman to the center of the Iranian plateau through pipes. If water from the Gulf of Oman is transported to the central part of the country, it is possible to increase the area of pistachio orchards and consequently production.

Pistachio is grown mainly in Kerman, Razavi Khorasan, Yazd, Fars, South Khorasan, Semnan, Markazi and Qom provinces of Iran.

On average, more than 130 million tons of agricultural products are grown in Iran annually.
