BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 7. Iran’s sprat fishing in the Caspian Sea has intensified from the beginning of this Iranian year (March 21, 2023) until January 7, 2024, compared to the same period previous year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Reza Abbaspour Naderi said, Trend reports.

Overall, Iran caught 11,865 tons of sprats from the Caspian Sea in the specified period, which is 5 percent more than the amount caught in the same period the preceding year, Naderi noted.

“Out of this amount, 8,456 tons came from the Mazandaran Province basin of the Caspian Sea, which is a 6-percent increase from last year,” the official said.

He added that the rest of the sprats, 3,409 tons, were caught in the Gilan Province basin of the Caspian Sea and showed a 2-percent rise from last year.

More than 90 percent of the sprats caught in the Caspian Sea by Iran are used to make fish powder. Sprat is more nutritious than many bony fish, and that is why it is turned into fish powder. To preserve the sprat population in the Caspian Sea, fishing there in spring is not allowed.
