Jeep to build Wrangler-based pickup?

(autoinsidernews) - Back in August we reported that Jeep had decided not it would re-enter the compact pickup truck segement and would not build a pickup based on the Gladiator Concept shown at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show because the project would not be profitable. Apparently, that wasn't entirely true, seems Jeep has been working on another pickup based on the Wrangler platform.

The Wrangler-based pickup, rumored to be called the Scrambler, is expected to be unveiled at the SEMA show next week. The prototype shown here is powered by a 5.7L HEMI V8, and features front and rear winches, larger wheels and tires, a raised roof with safari slits, and grab handles on the cab, reports Trend.

Rumors say that Jeep may also announce a kit to retrofit 1997-2006 Wranglers with the pickup bed. If Jeep was to produce a pickup based on the 2007 Wrangler, it would solve the cost issues, which killed the Gladiator concept because of its own unique platform.
