WB Mission Studying Water Supply and Collection System in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan

A mission of the World Bank (WB) headed by Andreas Rodeau, the Chief of WB Group of Projects, visiting Azerbaijan since January 19, 2007, left Baku for Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan to get acquainted with the structure of the water supply and collection systems in the Azerbaijan enclave.

Trend was informed by WB Baku Office, that two districts of the Azerbaijan region are expected to be included in the project on the improvement of the water supply and collection systems. Components of the project are expected to be made more precise during the visit.

Due to the above mentioned reason, the WB experts found it necessary to study the management system in this Azerbaijan region, which differs from the Central Republican, since the agencies engaged in this field are not subjected to Azersu JSC.

The Nakhchivan Republic Irrigation Committee is occupied with these issues вЂ" managing the water supply and collection systems in the region.

The project totally covers 20 districts of the country. A feasibility study has been prepared in ten of the regions. The other ten are expected to be involved in the project later, however, everything will happen step by step, and the preparatory work will begin as physical works in the regions is complete.

According to the WB Strategic Partnership with the Azerbaijan Government for 2007-2010, in Financial 2007, WB is about to grant a credit at $220 mln. to Azerbaijan to improve its water supply and collection systems. Other $200 mln. are expected to be given to Azerbaijan to develop its national water supply and collection systems in Financial 2008 and 2010.

The WB mission is expected to last its visit to the country till January 18, 2007.
