Cargo Transportation Increases by 17% in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend / From January to May 2007, cargo deliveries involving all modes of transport has made up 63.5 mln tons, 17% more than in 2006

Cargo deliveries in the private sector made up 65.4%. 46.6% of the total cargo was transported by vehicle, 28.5% by pipeline (17.1% via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline), 18.5% by railway and 6.4% by ship.

Passenger transportation made up 449.7mln (an increase of 7%), the private sector was 82.7%. Passenger transportation was mainly carried out by vehicles (82.8%) and the metro (16.5%).

In January to May cargo transportation by vehicles made up 11.8mln tons of cargo, or 6.8% more than 2006. Cargo shipping dropped 31.1% which comprised 4 mln tons. The drop in transportation is caused by a decrease in transit cargo deliveries. 61.7% of cargo deliveries were for oil and oil products, while 38.3% was for dry cargo. The entire amount of cargo deliveries was implemented under international operations

In January to May 2007, cargo reproduced at the ports of Azerbaijan made up 2.1mln tons, or 28.2% less than last year.

During this period cargo transportation by vehicles made up 29.6mln tons of cargo, or 8.3% more than 2006. Passenger transportation comprised 372.5mln people, or up 6.4%, with 96.7% people utilizing the buses and 3.3% people utilizing vehicles.

The metro continues to be the most popular and profitable modes of transport. During this period the passenger transportation by metro rose 10% and made up 74.8mln passengers. Metro passenger transportation was 18.7% and made up 527,900 passengers. 5.2% of the passenger transportation was from the private sector.

In January to April 2007 15.5mln tons of cargo was transported via the Eurasian corridor, which is 2.9% less than the same period of 2006.
