Ukraine not Receives Official Notification of Gazprom on Debt Recovery for Gas

Ukraine, Kiev, 24 November / corr Trend Z.Novosvitskiy / Ukraine did not receive an official notification on debt recovery for gas from Russian Gazprom open joint-stock company (OJSC), Yuri Prodan, Ukrainian minister of fuel and energy told journalists in the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers.

"Today [24 November] we received information that a claim would be filed, but official materials were not sent," Prodan said.

"There are questions, but they are current calculations, which we always have," said minister concerning current state of calculations of Ukraine for delivered gas before Gazprom OJSC.   

According to statements of Gazprom, Ukrainian debt for Russian gas totals $2.4bln.

Gazprom prepared a mechanism of court influence on Ukraine for non-payment of debts for gas, Alexander Medvedev, deputy CEO of Gazprom.

"We prepared everything. If it is necessary, mechanism of compulsory recovery of the debt will be launched," he said.

Medvedev did not specify what measures would be taken and what is specifically the mechanism of compulsion.

On 23 November, Dmitry Medvedev, President of Russian Federation, also stated that Russia is prepared to compel Ukraine to recover the debt for gas through court, if it is necessary.

Meanwhile, Yulia Timoshenko, Ukrainian prime minister, insists that RosUkrEnergo owed Gazprom for delivery of gas and Ukraine is not related to the debts.
