The major reason for the recent gas blasts and leaks in Baku is the absence of heating systems in buildings. Residents are forced to use nonstandard gas devices as a result, Azerigaz head Alikhan Malikov said at a news conference on Jan. 23.
"It is prohibited to use gas devices to heat homes in paneled buildings," Malikov said.
Azerigaz appealed to the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers to accelerate procedures to provide buildings with heating systems, he said.
With the coming of winter this year, gas blasts began to occur frequently in Baku.
The most recent blast occurred in a 5-story building at 30 Javadkhan St. on Jan. 16. The fourth and fifth stories in one section of the building completely collapsed. The blast killed 5 and injured 10.
On Jan. 22, Bakgaz head Tahir Aliyev also stressed that it is prohibited to use gas devices to heat homes in paneled buildings. Gas devices can only be used in private homes based on the regulations, he said.
