Political initiatives must be transformed into actual projects to allow Europe to achieve its energy objectives, European Energy Commissar Andris Piebalgs said.
"We must be ready to make bold decisions today to achieve progress tomorrow," Piebalgs' official Web site quoted him as saying.
The gas crisis has demonstrated the need to build additional pipelines to ensure viable gas supplies. Even if Europe builds new supply lines and reinforces its foreign energy policies, energy supplies might be affected by decisions made far from Europe, he said.
"But there is a lot we can do at home to improve the security of our supplies," Piebalgs added.
One of Europe's energy priorities is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to prevent climate change, he said. The use of oil must also be reduced in the transport sector. Electric, hydrogen and alternative fuel cars should dominate European roads in the future, Piebalgs said.
Europe should become a model of energy efficiency.
