The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR) will commence exploratory drilling on a perspective gas condensate Umid field in the Azerbaijani section of the Caspian Sea in July, a source from SOCAR said on May 2.
The main goal of exploratory drilling is to increase gas production in the country.
"Drilling is scheduled for July. Only part of work will be done by the end of the year," the source said.
The depth of the first exploration well range from 6,500 meters and only 4,000 meters will be drilled this year," the source added.
Presently, SOCAR is carrying out construction work on Umid-1 platform, where drilling is to be done. The platform will be installed 15km of Bulla Deniz field at the depth of 58 meters. A total of six gas wells are expected to be drilled from the platform.
Earlier SOCAR President Rovnag Abdullayev said SOCAR geologists assess the total gas reserves in the field at 300 billion cubic meters. The expected gas condensate reserves constitute 30-40 million tons.
