South Corridor summit to enhance EU energy safety: head of European Commission

The South Corridor summit will allow to approach key players in the region in order to enhance the EU energy safety. This summit will lay foundation for cooperation for all interested sides, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said.

"We are going on the way of concrete liabilities to implement the South Corridor project after four intensive years of dialogue with our partners from Central Asia, South Caucasus and Middle East," Barroso said.

Czechia is the initiator of the summit which will be held in Prague on May 8. An invitation was sent to presidents and prime ministers of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Georgia and Turkey. Representatives from Russia, Iraq, Egypt and Uzbekistan were invited as observers.

The summit's objective is to provide strong political support and concrete liabilities on implementation of South Corridor, including the Trans Caspian pipeline.

This is the first summit which will assemble potential partners on South Corridor to discuss joint interests.

A multilateral intergovernmental agreement on South Corridor and Nabucco projects are expected to be sign in the end of the summit.
