Iran may be involved in Nabucco project, but for this, it needs to establish relations with the United States, said research fellow of the Columbia University Center for Energy, Marine Transport and Public Policy, Janine Mitchell.
"To ensure Iran's involvement in Nabucco project, it is necessary to restore friendly relations between Iran and the United States," said Mitchell on July 31 at a meeting with media at the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Azerbaijan.
Nabucco gas pipeline project worth €7.9 billion envisages gas supply from the Caspian region to EU countries. Construction of gas pipeline was scheduled for 2011. The first supplies will be launched in 2014. Maximal capacity of pipeline will hit 31 billion cubic meters per year. Participants of the project are Austrian OMV, Hungarian MOL, Bulgarian Bulgargaz, Romanian Transgaz, Turkish Botas and German RWE companies.
She said that the EU should adopt a unified position and pursue a coherent and coordinated energy policy in the Caucasus and Eurasia.
"When this is achieved, the possible barriers and risks in implementing the projects, in particular Nabucco, will reduce," said Mitchell.
