Switzerland is interested in importing Azerbaijani gas to Europe, Swiss Ambassador to Azerbaijan Alain Guidetti said at a press conference Nov. 3.

"Azerbaijan and Switzerland signed a memorandum on energy cooperation and security in 2007," Guidetti said. "The Swiss company EGL is interested in participating in the Azerbaijani energy sector."

Switzerland is considering energy resource diversification to ensure future energy security. The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) is seen as a possible method diversification, and will range from Greece to Italy via Albania.

EGL together with the Norwegian company StatoilHydro will develop, construct and co-own the pipeline. TAP's capacity will hit 10 billion meters of gas per year with a possible increase to 20 billion cubic meters.

EGL owns generation assets in Europe. The company signed a long-term gas contract worth 5.5 billion cubic meters annually beginning from 2012 at the DAF basis [Iranian-Turkish border] with the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) in March 2007.
