Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 20 / Trend E.Ismayilov /

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) has already drilled 1,790 meters of the designed depth of new well at the "March 8 - 730", on the offshore 8 March field developed by the company independently, a source in SOCAR said.

The drilling is underway. Projected depth of the well is 5,800 meters, 1,790 meters of which have already been drilled, the source added.

If no complications arise during the drilling, then the drilling will be completed by late 2010.

Earlier SOCAR planned to begin drilling new wells on the platform number 578, but due to the fact that setting the rig made it difficult to maintain production from other wells, it was decided to move the rig to the platform number 730, and start drilling here.

At present, March 8 field daily produces more than 400,000 cubic meters of gas. Company's geologists have identified nine points for further drilling, SOCAR said earlier.

Azerbaijan has 59 oil and gas fields, 18 of which are offshore and the rest-onshore.
