Azerbaijan, as a major exporter of traditional energy resources, has sufficient time to make the transfer to alternative and renewable energy sources, World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE) Chairman and German Bundestag member Hermann Scheer said on Monday at a conference on alternative energy sources in Baku.
According to Scheer, Azerbaijan is an important hydrocarbon exporter, creating the conditions for alternative energy sources development.
Oil and gas rich countries meet their own energy needs via local resources, while earning revenue through energy exports. Thus, such countries have enormous potential to develop alternative energy sources, as traditional energy imports are costly and bring massive revenues.
"Now Azerbaijan is an energy exporter and you have more time to prepare for the transition to alternative energy sources," Scheer said.
According to the head of the council, developing alternative and renewable energy sources is costly due to the equipment required, but unlike traditional forms of energy, their stocks are unlimited.
"Reducing the price on technology will lead to the wide-scale use of alternative energy sources," Scheer said.
