Azerbaijan will switch completely to electronic power meters running on smart cards over the next two years, Azerbaijan Scientific and Research Project Energy Institute Director Nurali Yusifov said July 20.

The country has already installed roughly 1.5 million new generation meters, which account for nearly 60-70 percent of the country's total subscribers.

"Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said at the CIS Electric Power Council that Azerbaijan's experience must be studied in making the transition to smart meters," Yusifov said.

Earlier, Azerenergy President Etibar Pirverdiyev said the meters will resolve about 95-98 percent of the country's electricty payment problems.

The meters were first installed in Ganja. About 75,000 subscribers have received the devices.
