National Iran Oil Company (NIOC) studying enhancing oil recovery from heavy oil reservoirs Dr. Mohammad Nikokar who is charge the project said to Shana on Friday.
A project to enhance oil recovery from the reservoirs containing heavy oil is underway at the Enhancing Oil Recovery Institute.
In an interview with Shana, Dr. Nikokar said the project aims at enhancing oil recovery form 80 billion barrels of heavy oil reservoirs including Koemond oil field.
"Regarding falling light oil production in the one hand and rising global oil consumption on the other, enhancing oil recovery from Iran's heavy oil reservoirs is very important", Нe said.
Noting that no special project has been carried out on enhancing oil recovery from heavy oil reserves in Iran, Nikokar said the Institute at the NIOC's Research and Technology Department is studying on the project in two phases, through steam injection and in situ combustion.
The gravity of heavy oil is different from light one so determining an appropriate method to enhance oil recovery from these kinds of reservoirs is important from the beginning, the official noted.
Stating that Kohemond oil field has been chosen for examination and finding an appropriate method, Dr. Nilokar pointed out that currently Iran's Petroleum Engineering and Development Company accompanied by a foreign company have started the development work at the oil field.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he said that more likely the two sides would finalize a contract in next four months to develop the field then some injection and production wells would be drilled for more studies on the reservoir.
Iran is the third largest oil producer in the world. Iran's production reached 3.8 million barrels per day in 2009.
