At a meeting with the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Ashgabat, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov described the construction of a pipeline under the Caspian Sea as the "most attractive" way to deliver Turkmen gas to Europe.

"With regards to the ways to deliver natural gas from Turkmenistan to European markets, there are several options. The most attractive of them from commercial, financial and infrastructural point of view is the construction of a pipeline under the Caspian Sea," he said.

Nov. 18, 2010 in Baku at the summit of Caspian states, Turkmenistan officially announced its position, saying that laying an underwater pipeline via the Caspian Sea can be done only with the consent of those States through the territories of which such a pipeline will be built in accordance with the highest international environmental standards and regulations. Berdimuhamedov reminded this position on Saturday.

The Turkmen leader also mentioned the possibility of transporting compressed natural gas via the Caspian Sea.

"This will require creating special infrastructure and presence of the tanker fleet. I believe that these and other options for Turkmen gas supplies to Europe may be the topic of very serious discussions between Turkmenistan and the concerned European countries and companies," he stressed.
