Azerbaijani Railways transported 4.5 million tons of oil cargo in January-May, a source in the company said. The figure is more by 10 percent compared to the same period of 2010.
In 2010 Azerbaijani Railways transported 11.78 million tons of cargo.
Azerbaijani Railways transported 8.6 million tons in January- May, which is more by 10 percent compared to the same period of 2010.
"A 10-percent increase was observed in the transportation of oil products in January-May. Azerbaijani Railways transported 4.5 million tons of oil cargo and the rest portion fell to different cargo," the source said.
The Azerbaijani railway regularly transports oil cargo from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, including Azerbaijan. Oil and oil products are transported by railway to the Kulevi Oil Terminal (of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) to the Black Sea oil terminal of the Georgian port of Batumi and the Georgian port of Poti.
The total length of railways in Azerbaijan is 2,929.4 km, 2,099.7 of which are operational. Some 804.7 km of the total length of railways, which are in operation, are two-lane roads.
Moreover, 1271.4 km or 60 percent of railways in operation are electrified and 1,650 kilometers are equipped with an automated signal system
