Iran should import 3 million barrels of crude oil per day if the country's energy consumption continues to increase, the Mehr News Agency reported quoting Chief of the Transportation and Fuel Management Office Mohammad Royanian as saying.

"Iran's current energy consumption indicates that the country should import 2 to 3 million barrels of crude oil per day to provide domestic needs," he said.

He noted Iran's energy consumption is 4.5 times more than Japan and 1.5 times more than China's average consumption.

The statistics indicates concerns over mounting energy consumption and if it continues the country's energy consumption rate will be higher than production rate, he added.
