Construction agreement of Kazakh Balkhash thermal power plant to be signed in March

The Samruk-Energy company, part of Kazakhstan's Samruk-Kazyna National Welfare Fund, will sign the agreements on the construction of the Balkhash thermal power plant (TPP) with a South Korean KEPCO and Samsung, the Samruk-Energy Chairman of the Board of Directors Almasadam Satkaliyev said on Tuesday, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported.

The agreements will be signed within Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's visit to Seoul.

"Samruk-Energy has completed the negotiations on Balkhash thermal power plant project major agreements with a consortium of KEPCO and Samsung. The documents are planned to be signed in March within the President's official visit to Korea," Satkaliyev said at the governmental meeting.

Satkaliyev said that the construction of the plant's main facilities will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The intergovernmental agreement on development, financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Balkhash thermal power plant was signed within South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's visit to Kazakhstan in August 2011.

The designed capacity of Balkhash thermal power plant makes up 2640 MW. The 1st and the 2nd power generation unit of the plant will be commissioned in 2013, the 3rd and the 4th units - in 2016.

The construction was launched in summer 2010.
