Azerbaijan, Baku, April 5 / Trend E.Ismayilov /

SOCAR is drilling four wells in two underground gas storages in Azerbaijan, a SOCAR source told Trend on Thursday.

"Due to the drilling, it will be possible to increase the volume of gas injection into underground gas storage facilities," the source said.

The source noted that two wells are being drilled in Garadagh and two in the Kalmaz gas storage. Preparation for drilling another well at Kalmaz is underway.

The source said the number of active wells from which gas is pumped in Garadagh is 38 units, while in Kalmaz the number is 101 units.

The drilling aims to increase the gas storage volume in gas storage facilities.

The source told Trend previously that it will be possible by 2014-2015 to increase the volumes of gas storage in underground storage facilities to 5 billion cubic meters. The process of increasing the injection capacity will depend on drilling new and repairing old wells.

According to forecasts, the volume of gas in underground storage facilities in Azerbaijan, following the end of the injection season in 2012, may reach 3.5 billion cubic meters compared to about 3.25 billion cubic meters in 2011.
