Kazakhstan needs a well-defined policy on preparing 'national champions' among service companies in the oil and gas sector, chairman of the presidium of the Union of Service Companies of Kazakhstan Zhandarbek Kakishev said on Tuesday.

"State agencies and national companies of the country should develop a well-defined policy on preparing 'national champions' among Kazakhstan's major service companies, the so-called EPC contractors," Kakishev said while addressing the Kazneftegazservice-2012 Conference in Astana. He said all oil and gas countries passed through a similar process.

"Kazakh companies need not so much favours as opportunities to participate in projects on an equal footing," he said.

The Kazneftegazservice-2012 is dedicated to discussions over such issues as the construction of oil and gas pipelines, the further implementation of major oil and gas projects on the Caspian shelf.
