Azerbaijan intends to export electricity to the amount of 750 million kilowatt hours per year under the Energy Bridge project to Turkey via Georgia, chairman of the board and general director of the state electricity selling company of Turkey (TETAS) Hadji Duran Gokkaya told Trend on Thursday.
"We held talks with Azerenergy (production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) and have positive results. The amounts of energy and export routes were negotiated," Gokkaya, who led the Turkish delegation at the talks in Baku, said.
Gokkaya added that there is only one issue undecided, whether the private or public sector will implement the export. As for the timing of the exports, he noted that the deadlines will be announced at the next meeting with representatives of Azerenergy, who will visit Turkey in the near future.
Azerenergy said earlier that the company will export electricity to Turkey via Georgia this year. Previously, it was envisaged that electricity exports from Azerbaijan to Turkey will begin in 2013.
'Currently works on reconstruction of the transmission is being implemented in order to provide export', Azerenergy said.
Gokkaya also noted that the CEO of TEIAS, the electricity transmission company, Kemal Yildirim was also in Baku and familiarised himself with the work of the new cable plant in Sumgait. Cooperation between TEIAS and plant for the production of the cable was discussed.
Electricity exports from Azerbaijan to Turkey are planned under the Energy Bridge project with aims to connect the power systems of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.
The power line transmission to the border between Azerbaijan and Georgia should be reconstructed in order to ensure exports. The Georgian side in turn must also complete construction work on its territory.
