SOCAR to provide smart meters to subscribers in several Azerbaijani cities within two years

In the next two years, the Azerigaz Production Association of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) will complete installation of gas meters working on a pre-payment system, using a smart card for all subscribers among populations of Baku, Ganja, Agsu, Sumgayit, Hajigabul, Naftalan and territories adjacent to them, Azerigaz Production Association told Trend on Monday.

According to the report, in the next four years it is planned to install over 400,000 smart meters in the regional centres and cities of Azerbaijan.

'Before June 1, as many as 371,749 smart meters were installed for subscribers among the population, including, 2011 when the figure was 139,524', the report says.

At present, the number of gas subscribers in Azerbaijan is 1.41 million, of which those among the population accounts for more than 1.39 million, while the rest are other subscribers. The entire population are to be provided with counters, as a mechanical type, and smart meters.

As Azerigaz head Akbar Hajiyev said earlier, until late 2012 Azerigaz will complete the process of providing subscribers in Baku with counters working on a prepayment system.
