The Ufa-Omsk main pipeline damaged in the North Kazakhstan region has been repaired, and pumping of diesel fuel via the pipeline has been resumed, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported with reference to Regional Emergency Situations Department spokesman Eugene Zhuravlev.
"Welding work to replace the pipeline's damaged section was completed in the morning on July 12, and diesel fuel pumping via the pipeline was resumed at 19:00, July 12," Zhuravlev said.
On July 9 yellow oily spots with characteristic smell of diesel fuel were revealed in Mamlyutki town in the North-Kazakhstan region in water of wetland area. Main trans-boundary pipelines lay in this area. Following earthworks, a flaw with 200 millimeters diameter was found in Ufa - Omsk diesel pipeline. The total area of oil spill was 50 meters wide and 100 meters long. According to the preliminary version, the pipeline's damage was due to corrosive wear of metal pipe. No victims were reported.
According to Zhuravlev, currently contaminated soil and polluted mixture from the pipeline's emergency reservoirs is exported to a storage in the city of Petropavlovsk.
