Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 15 / Trend, E.Ismayilov /

The gas from Umid gas condensate field will meet Azerbaijan's growing demand in the future, SOCAR head Rovnag Abdullayev told media today.

It is planned to start transporting gas from "Umid" field soon through an underwater gas pipeline. It is also planned to begin drilling the third well in the field soon.

Abdullayev said that demand for gas in Azerbaijan is growing. The country actively operates in gasification sphere to bring its level to 95 percent.

Azerbaijan receives gas from gas condensate field "Shah Deniz" and a block of oil and gas fields "Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli" within the contracts.

"But we try to use gas from Umid field for the country's needs not to hope for only Shah Deniz and Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli fields," he said.

According to SOCAR, the results of drilling the first exploratory well suggest that the reserve's volume exceeds 200 billion cubic meters of gas and 40 million tons of condensate.
The Umid Field is located 75 kilometres from Baku. In 1953 the first geophysical works were carried out. They were repeated in 1972 in a somewhat improved form. From 1977 to 1992, nine wells were drilled with negative results.
