Construction work for a second 409 megawatt energy block at the Shimal power station is on schedule, a report from Azerenerji (production and distribution of electric power) said on Monday.

"The construction is on schedule. Work on the construction of new electricity transmission lines and substations will be conducted in this project and completed by the end of this year, the report says.

The purpose of the construction work is to provide an energy supply to the Absheron peninsula and to the power gtrid in general.

According to the contract signed with Japanese firm Toyo Engineering, it was decided to launch the construction of the second 400 megawatt energy block. The Foundation Laying Ceremony was held last year, on September 21.

A new 22 kilowatt electricity transmission line and a number of substations will be constructed within the commission of the second energy block which will provide energy security for the Absheron peninsula and the country's energy system in general.

The capacity of power stations on the balance sheet of Azerenerji exceeds 6000 megawatts. Over 200 substations with a capacity of 500, 330,220 and 110 kilovolts as well as six hydropower stations and 13 thermal power plants are owned by the company.
