Imports of fuel to Georgia increased compared to last year, the Union of Importers of Petroleum Products said.

According to the organisation, for 10 months of 2012, imports of fuel (gasoline and solar oil) amounted to 692,600 tons, or 24,000 tons more than last year. During the reporting period, 316,100 tons of gasoline and 376,500 tons of diesel fuel were imported.

The largest volume of fuel was imported from Azerbaijan - 266,900 tons. This was followed by Romania - 186,300 tons, Bulgaria - 147,000 tons, Russia - 53,600 tons, Italy - 23,600 tons and Greece - 13,000 tons.

The Union of Importers notes that this year fuel prices were kept at a high level and even at a record in some cases.

This meant car owners actively began to move to alternative fuel - auto gas, the price of which is much lower and stable (1.10 lari per cubic meter) compared to gasoline.

However despite this, gasoline consumption not only decreased, but actually increased, the organisation said.
