Kazakhstan will build Atomic Power Plant in one of the energy-deficient regions, the spokesperson of Kazakh National Atomic Company Kazatomprom Kristina Podshivalova told Trend by phone on Friday.

Earlier Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev ordered the government to chose the place for Future Atomic Power Plant in the country.

"The President ordered to make an energy balance map of the country, to determine which regions are energy-deficient and then the government will make decision on Atomic Power Plant location," Podshivalova said.

According to Kazatomprom's spokesperson, the most power- hungry area in Kazakhstan is southern regions.

Moreover, the city of Aktau was considered as a possibly site for future Atomic Power Plant because this region has great experience in the sphere of nuclear energy, Podshivalova said.

Aktau was once the site of a nuclear power station. The BN-350 breeder reactor went online in 1973 here, and was closed in 1999.

According to Podshivalova, the main problem of Aktau is lack of fresh water and Atomic Power Plant can solve this problem. The former Atomic Power Plant located in this region was initially aimed at water desalination, she said.

"Currently, water is desalinated by using traditional sources in the region. As a result, its price is more high. But the region's residents and ecologist say it is safer," Podshivalova said

Meanwhile, modern technology allows to ensure sufficient safety of nuclear reactors, she said
