The Jordanian Potash Company is holding talks on gas imports with Israel, the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources said today.
According to the report, the company is holding the talks with the American Nobel Company, operating in Israel.
The aim of the negotiations with Israel is to diversify the sources of supply and the relatively low cost of production and supply to Jordan, the report said.
Jordan covers about 80 per cent of its gas needs through imports from Egypt. Starting from this month, Egypt cut gas supplies to Jordan by 36.4 per cent from 220 million cubic feet to 140 million cubic feet.
According to official data, Jordan's loss from a short supply of Egyptian gas is about $1 billion per year, but in reality there can be more losses, member of the Jordanian Senate Mustafa Fayyad told Trend earlier.
Mass demonstrations have been held in Jordan since early Jan. in connection with the increase in fuel prices up to 50 per cent because of the growing state budget deficit of the country which is $7.7 billion.
