Azerenergy (production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) has created a new water intake system to supply water to the Shimal plant to prevent possible problems with the freezing of water near the seaside, the head of Azerenergy Elchin Mammadov said on Thursday at a press tour organized by the Japanese Embassy.

Last winter, some problems with the water supply to the combined-cycle gas turbine of the Shimal power plant occurred due to the freezing of sea water off the coast of the Caspian Sea.
Mammadov said that the construction of a pipe to a distance of 450 meters from the seaside under the sand with access to a water depth of eight meters is underway. Water intake will be at an average depth of four meters. This is the first Caspian system of this nature.

The water needs of both the first and second unit of the power station will be met through the construction of the new system, which will prevent the problem of water freezing in the Caspian, and avoid getting in the system of sand, sea grass and other waste.
