Head of EU Delegation: Azerbaijan has great alternative energy potential

Azerbaijan is rich in energy resources and at the same time, has great alternative and renewable energy resource, including wind, solar and geothermal energy, Head of the EU delegation in Azerbaijan Roland Kobia said at a press conference on Tuesday.

According to him, Azerbaijan may use the energy of sea waves in the long term.

"The EU supports Azerbaijan in the development of alternative energy.

A number of measures have been prepared and implemented in this area, including the twinning program, regional programs, the United Nations Development Programme, INOGATE, and 14 million euros allocated for the development of programs for alternative energy," Kobia said.

According to him, Azerbaijan is a strategic partner and the EU is going to support and continue energy cooperation with the country on these matters.

As the head of the State Agency for the Development of Renewable and Alternative Energy Sources Akim Badalov said, studies have been conducted and proposals made on tariff system and personnel policy within preparation for the strategy of development of alternative energy in Azerbaijan.

Badalov noted that the strategy was submitted to the government.

According to him, there are plans to create hybrid plants in different regions of the country. Their capacity at the initial stage will be 15-20 MW, followed by 45-50 MW.
