Turkey is holding negotiations with China and South Korea on the implementation of a project for the construction and modernisation of $12 billion worth of Thermal Power Plants, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said, the Sabah newspaper reported on Friday.

According to the minister, immediately after the United Arab Emirates rejected the construction of the Thermal Power Plants, Turkey started work on a back-up plan.

On August 27, it became known that the National Energy Company of UAE TAQA had rejected the project for construction of a Thermal Power Plant in Turkey's Afshin-Elbistan area.

In January 2013, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of brown coal mining and power generation in the same area.

New thermal power stations were planned to be built as part of this agreement in Afshin-Elbistan, where deposits of 40 per cent of Turkey's domestic lignite is located.

The TAQA Company planned to construct the first stage of a new Thermal Power Station in Afshin-Elbistan area by the end of 2014. It was planned to construct the second Thermal Power Station in the second half of 2014.
