Peak of daily electricity consumption in Iran up 1.25GW

Electricity consumption in Iran rose by 1.25 gigawatts (GW) on Wednesday compared to the same day in the past year, IRIB reported.

The peak of consumption hit 35.502GW on Wednesday compared to 34.250 GW on the same day in the past year.

Industrial units nationwide consumed 3.261GW of electricity on the same day.

Iran has constructed twice as many power plants as the global average over the past decade, former deputy energy minister Mohammad Behzad said.

The country's power generation capacity is currently at 68.38 GW, he added.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan (including Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic), Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.

Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.
