Possible New Oil Terminal in Azerbaijan

If needed, a new oil terminal can be built in the future. The new Baku International Sea Trade Port that will be located in Alat settlement 65 kilometers to the South of Baku, Azerbaijan's socio-economic development concept for 2014 and the next three years said.

"The new port will allow the processing of dry cargo, the transportation of containers and the dispatch of ferries. In the future, in case of necessity, an oil terminal can also be constructed at the port," the plan read.

According to the document, the construction of a new port and moving of the old one from the capital's center is of great significance in terms of partial decreasing of tensions in Baku streets and improvement of ecological situation in the city.

"The port will be able to process some 11.6 million tons of cargo per year in 2015," the concept stressed.

Earlier, the Minister of Transport Ziya Mammadov said that the construction of the new port's dry cargo terminal will be completed in 2015 and it is planned to commission a ferry terminal and the whole road infrastructure in 2014.

Construction of the new international sea port in Alat will be carried out in three stages. The first stage envisages the construction of two ferry and three cargo berths for receiving containers, ro-ro type ships and ordinary (universal) dry-cargo ships. The second stage of the project envisages the construction of three more cargo berths, the third - the construction of additional two cargo berths. The port will be able to receive up to 11.6 million tons of cargo per year.
