Oil pumping through BTC increases in first quarter

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline transported some 8.6 million tons of oil in January-March compared to 8.1 million tons in the same period of 2013, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said on April 16.

"The three-quarter of all oil transported via the main oil pipelines of the country fell to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline in January-March, the committee said.

In total, some 33 million tons of oil were transported via BTC in 2013 compared to 32.9 million tons in 2012.

Some 11.5 million tons of oil were transported through the main oil pipelines during the reporting period, which is 7.6 percent more than in the same period of 2013, the committee said.

The total length of the BТС is 1768 kilometers including a 443 kilometer long section running through Azerbaijan, a 249 kilometer long section in Georgia and a 1076 kilometer long section in Turkey. The construction of the pipeline started in April 2003. It was filled with oil on May 18, 2005.

BTC shareholders are BP (30.1 percent), AzBTC (25 percent), Chevron (8.9 percent), Statoil (8.71 percent), TPAO (6.53 percent), Eni (five percent), Total (five percent), Itochu (3.40 percent), Inpex (2.5 percent), ConocoPhilips (2.50 percent) and ONGC (2.36 percent).

Some 1.6 billion cubic meters of gas were transported through the South Caucasus Gas Pipeline (Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum) in January-March compared to 962,500 cubic meters in the same period of 2013, the State Statistics Committee said.

Some 4.7 billion cubic meters of gas were transported through the South Caucasus gas pipeline in 2013 compared to four billion cubic meters in 2012.

Some 6.2 billion cubic meters of gas were transported via the main gas pipelines in January-March or by 13.2 percent more than in January-March 2013.

The length of the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum (South Caucasus gas pipeline) is over 700 km.

The gas produced from the Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea is transported via the pipeline. The gas is supplied to Georgia and Turkey. Azerbaijan also is a buyer of gas.
