Iran to launch wind farm in northeastern province

Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 9

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran will launch a wind farm in the northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi.

Iran's Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian said that a wind power plant will be established with a generation capacity of 100 megawatts in Khaf region of Khorasan Razavi province by the end of the current year, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on September 7.

Other wind power plants, with a total capacity of 475MW, will be established next year, he added.

The current Iranian year started on March 21.

Chitchian said on April 12 that each kilowatt of renewable power saves a quarter liter of diesel as fuel in power plants.

Iran plans to generate 5,000 megawatts of electricity using renewable sources of energy over five years.

Power generation capacity in Iran has grown by seven percent annually during the past 10 years. The figure has averaged 3.5 percent in the world.

Iran is currently the biggest electricity producer in the Middle East.

Iran's total electricity generation currently stands at 70 gigawatts.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.
