Azerbaijan intends to put into operation power generating capacity of 2,400 megawatts by 2020, Deputy Head of Energy Department of the Energy Ministry Asaf Rzayev told reporters Oct. 27.

"The capacity of the country's power grid will increase due to the launch of the second combined cycle gas turbine unit at the Shimal station with a capacity of 409 megawatt, a power station in Jashma - 920 megawatt, Hovsan power station - 600 megawatts and two hydroelectric power stations with total capacity of 40 megawatts, etc.

"Currently, the main source of electricity generation - 92 percent accounted for gas, 7.9 percent - water resources and only 0.1 percent - alternative sources. The work is underway in the country to develop alternative and renewable energy sources to diversify the sources."

Up to 100 alternative energy facilities are planned to be built in Azerbaijan within five years, according to the preliminary research.
