By Huseyn Hasanov- Trend:

Turkmenistan is a promising and reliable partner, capable of ensuring stable energy supplies, Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer said.

Fischer made this statement during the talks with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov, who is on an official visit to Vienna, the Turkmen government said on May 13.

Fischer expressed support for the policy implemented by Turkmenistan in this area and aimed at diversifying the export energy routes, the statement said. He stressed the European countries' great interest in natural gas supplies from Turkmenistan, which is one of the largest gas suppliers to the world markets.

He said that an important role is assigned to the energy sector in a wide range of areas of cooperation among the EU and Central Asian countries.

"Today, Austria can be an example of the effective use of alternative energy sources, including wind, solar, however, the country meets two-thirds of its energy needs through gas. Austria supports the projects ensuring diversification and de-politicization of gas routes," Fisher said. "This is consonant with the position of Turkmenistan."

The joint Memorandum of Understanding in the area of intensifying the energy cooperation signed in 2011 was one of the first actions of creating the appropriate legal framework.

In turn, the president of Turkmenistan said that energy is a promising direction, where cooperation of the two countries can gain strategic nature.

"Turkmenistan and Austria share the view that ensuring global energy security is the most important component of stability and sustainability of the system of international political and economic relations today," he said.

"Its key aspect is the diversification of energy supplies, in particular, establishment of new routes from Turkmenistan to the West," Berdimuhammadov said.

Austria co-sponsored the draft resolution "Reliable and Stable Transit of Energy Resources and Its Role in Ensuring Sustainable Development and International Cooperation," which was adopted on the initiative of Turkmenistan by the UN General Assembly in 2008 and 2013.

Turkmenistan for Austria and the EU is one of the most promising partners in the areas of energy security and the opportunity to diversify the sources of supply of raw materials. One option for entering this market is the project of construction of a gas pipeline across the bottom of the Caspian Sea to the coast of Azerbaijan, which creates connecting transit communications with Turkey and Europe.
