Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov.19
By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:
Azerbaijan plays an important role in ensuring Europe's energy security, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, TRTHaber TV channel reported Nov.19.
He made the remarks during the Atlantic Council Energy and Economic Summit.
While Europe was planning to construct the Nabucco pipeline, Azerbaijan and Turkey started to implement the TANAP project, according to Erdogan.
He noted that the main reason for which the Nabucco project was not implemented is that Europe didn't allocate funds for it.
Erdogan pointed out that currently, the construction of TANAP gas pipeline continues in Turkey.
Turkey's president added that work is underway to attract gas from Turkmenistan and other alternative sources for transporting via TANAP.
TANAP is a part of the Southern Gas Corridor which is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It envisages the transportation of gas from the Caspian Sea region to European countries through Georgia and Turkey.
At the initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor projects. Other sources can also connect to this project at a later stage.
As part of the Stage 2 of the Shah Deniz field's development, the gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline.
