Azerenergy JSC (the main producer of electricity in Azerbaijan) plans to put into operation the second combined-cycle power unit at the Shimal power station in 2016, the company told Trend Dec. 28.

The construction is underway and most of the work has already been completed.

"The work is being held upon the schedule," the company said. "The unit is expected to be commissioned in 2016."

The capacity of the second combined-cycle unit at the "Shimal" power plant will be 409 megawatts. At present, power plant ensures a quarter of the electricity needs of Baku and Absheron. After the construction of the second unit, this figure will reach 35-40 percent. The construction of the second unit is based on a contract concluded with the Japanese company Toyo Engineering.

Currently, the "Shimal" power plant has one combined-cycle unit with a capacity of 400 megawatt.

The capacity of the Azerbaijani power system has increased by 30 percent for the past five years. Currently, the figure is 7,105 megawatts, which allows producing annually about 24 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity. This allows the country to export annually 2.1 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity.
