It is planned to increase capacity of gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan to five billion cubic meters, the Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR said in a message.
The decision was made at a technical meeting of the gas storage operation department of the Azneft Production Union dedicated to the first seven months of 2016 and the upcoming challenges.
Work on reconstruction and expansion of gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan will be held with this purpose, as well as new gas wells will be designed and the existing infrastructure will be upgraded.
Director General for the Azneft Production Union Dashgin Isgandarov, speaking at the meeting, told about the work regarding expansion and reconstruction of underground gas storage facilities carried out in recent years in line with Azerbaijani president's instructions to increase capacity of gas storage facilities, expand gas exports and secure domestic demand.
At the meeting it was noted that some 1.56 billion cubic meters of gas were pumped into the Kalmaz and Garadagh underground gas storage facilities until August 22, 2016, and it is planned to bring working gas volumes to 3.2 billion cubic meters till the end of the season.
Currently, the volume of working gas in underground storage facilities of Azerbaijan reaches 2.5 billion cubic meters.
It was also noted during the meeting that an overhaul and current repair were carried out on 26 wells in Azerbaijan during the year.
Capacity of underground gas storage facilities of Azerbaijan allow to store over 3.5 billion cubic meters of gas in them.
