On May 21, 2018 morning, unknown people tried to attack the construction site at the Afghani route of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline.

This incident occurred in one of the most dangerous areas of Afghanistan – in the district of Maiwand, says the message of the "Oil and Gas Complex" of Turkmenistan with reference to the TAPI Pipeline Company Limited Consortium.

Despite this, to date, 70 percent of the field studies of the pipeline route in Afghanistan, including the above-mentioned district, have been successfully completed or are in the final stage, and no safety problems of employees among the staff including 1,500 persons have been observed. This is the only incident that has happened since the beginning of field research in Afghanistan.

The incident is under investigation.

Despite this incident, TAPI Pipeline Company Limited Consortium continues to work in accordance with the planned schedule of construction of the TAPI gas pipeline, which will bring peace and stability to the Afghan people, the message says.

Turkmen section of TAPI, the construction of which started in December 2015, would be 205 kilometers. Then the pipeline will pass through the Afghan cities of Herat and Kandahar (816 km), then on the territory of Pakistan, through the city of Quetta and Multan (819 km), and will reach the settlement of Fazilka in India.

The construction of the Afghan section of the TAPI gas pipeline, which will export gas from the Turkmenistan’s Galkynysh field, the second largest field in the world, was started on February 23, 2018.

The projected costs of the TAPI project vary between $8-10 billion.

The consortium, with the participation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), continues active negotiations with all interested parties. Various options of participation in the project, such as participation in the company's share, project financing, financing through international development banks and with the help of export credit agencies from around the world are being examined.

As the leader of the international consortium TAPI Pipeline Company Limited, Turkmengas State Concern which has a controlling stake acts as the main financier and manager of the project.

The consortium also includes the Afghanistan Gas Corporation, Pakistan’s Inter State Gas Systems (Private) Limited Company and India’s GAIL Company.
