By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Bulgaria is interested in a special economic regime within Azerbaijan’s Alat free zone, Trend learned from the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company.

“Having in mind that Port of Baku acts as a major logistics hub in the Caspian region, serving both European and Asian markets, we would like to exchange views how we could develop the Bulgarian ports as a gateway for the cargo which comes from the Caspian region,” said the company.

“Moreover, we are interested in the special economic regime within Alat free zone. Because this free zone aims to become the major consolidation, concentration and distribution center of the region, serving the multi-dimensional markets of the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Iran, Southern Russia, and Turkey.”

Further, Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company said that the Director General of “Baku International Sea Trade Port” CJSC Taleh Ziyadov attended the 7th Black Sea Ports and Shipping 2018 Conference, organized for the first time in Bulgaria May 21-23 2018 and hosted by Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPI Co).

“The two-day conference was focused on the important and interesting topics like port investment and port development and expansion opportunities in the Black Sea region in coping with container traffic demands and optimizing cargo delivery process. This was a great opportunity to exchange experience in the sector,” said the company.

Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPI Co.) manages the port infrastructure of the public transport ports of national importance and provides traffic management and shipping information services.

BPI Co. has four territorial and three specialized divisions in Burgas, Varna, Lom and Ruse.

The port in Alat, which will become the largest port in the Caspian Sea, is an important part of Azerbaijan's transport infrastructure. The first phase of the port construction, which has already been completed, will allow transshipment of 15 million tons of cargo and 100,000 containers per year. According to the strategic road map, the second phase of the port construction should be completed by 2025.
