New modular power plant getting ready to open in Azerbaijan (Exclusive)

Preparation for the opening of the Lerik modular power plant with capacity of 16.5 megawatts is nearing completion, the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry told Trend.

“Construction and installation work, as well as debugging work, have already been completed,” the ministry noted.

Presently, the work also continues on construction of two other power plants - Shimal-2 and Ordubad hydroelectric power plant, according to the ministry.

“At the Shimal-2 power plant, the work continues in accordance with the schedule developed by Azerenergy OJSC,” the ministry said. “Construction of the second power unit of the plant, its integration with the first power unit, as well as construction and debugging of the refrigeration system outlet channel, fire extinguishing system and seawater purification unit, have been completed.”

“At the same time, construction of substations and distribution plants was completed and their security systems were installed,” the ministry noted. “Four 220-kilovolt power transmission lines connecting the power plant with nodal substations have been built, and the modernization of security systems on five 110-kilovolt power transmission lines has been completed. It is planned to commission the power plant by the end of this year. As for construction of the Ordubad derivation type hydroelectric power plant, the work on it currently continues.”

Earlier, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov told Trend that in order to increase Azerbaijan’s power capacity, it is planned to commission Ordubad hydroelectric power plant with capacity of 36 megawatts in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the Shimal-2 power plant with capacity of 400 megawatts and the Lerik modular power plant with capacity of 16.5 megawatts by the end of the year.

After that, the total power capacity of Azerbaijan will increase by an additional 452.5 megawatts, Shahbazov noted.

The power capacity of Azerbaijan’s energy system is more than 6,000 megawatts.
