The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will soon present an assessment of Azerbaijan’s readiness for the large-scale introduction of renewable energy sources, the Deputy Chairman of The State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jamil Malikov told Trend.

A two-day conference which was organized by the State Agency jointly with IRENA ended on October 17 in Baku, Malikov said.

"The main objective of this conference was to assess Azerbaijan's readiness for the development of renewable energy and prepare recommendations for the country on what needs to be done to improve this readiness," he said.

The conference was attended by representatives of Azerbaijan's state institutions, experts from IRENA and representatives of a number of Central Asian countries where similar work is being done.

"We hope that in the near future we will receive final recommendations on how Azerbaijan is ready for the large-scale introduction of renewable energy and what steps need to be taken in this direction," Melikov added.

From the point of view of the technological development, the most promising is solar energy, as there are already enterprises in Azerbaijan producing equipment for generating both thermal energy and electric power, Malikov said.

"This is also convenient because solar energy can be produced at different scales, ranging from micro - from 0.5 kilowatts to thousands of kilowatts of power. It is possible to modulate and, as investment is made, increase the capacity. Theoretically, such a possibility exists in this type of energy, and it is also convenient in operation," Malikov added.
