Subsidiary company Eni New Energy SpA of Italy’s Eni company has started construction of a photovoltaic plant at the Porto Torres industrial site in Sassari in Sardinia (Italy), Trend reports citing a message from Eni.

The peak installed capacity of the plans is expected to stand at 31 MW (megawatts).

The Porto Torres photovoltaic project is part of the Progetto Italia initiatives launched by Eni in 2016 and will be completed by the end of 2019.

Reportedly, around 70 percent of the energy produced every year, approximately 51 GWh (gigawatt hours), will be used by the companies operating at the industrial site, enabling around 26,000 tons less in annual CO2 emissions.

Thus, the project will contribute to achieving the objectives set out in Italy’s Regional Energy Plan and in the National Energy Strategy with regards to decarbonization and the amount of renewable energy in the energy mix.

Eni is an Italian company with a worldwide presence. It is one of the global oil and gas super-players – operating in 71 countries worldwide and employing around 33,000 people.

As of March 31, 2018, the company's market capitalization was calculated at $64 billion. In May 2017, Forbes magazine listed Eni among the top 500 global companies in terms of market capitalization, while the Fortune Global 500 ranked Eni among the top 150 companies by revenue.
