Gas demand is expected to rise in all three important EU gas markets, namely, in Germany, Poland and Belgium, Eurogas told Trend.

The association said that the global gas demand is mainly driven by developing economies: China uses gas to fight smog and improve air quality, India relies on gas as transportation fuel.

“In Europe, Germany will see much more demand for gas as it moves through its phase out of coal plan, and its neighbour Poland is also beginning to invest in gas infrastructure as a means to reduce emissions. On the other side of Germany, Belgium is planning a nuclear phase out and a gas phase in, so we expect demand to rise in all these three important EU gas markets,” said Eurogas.

The association noted that gas becomes more attractive in power generation and is also the preferred choice for heating in many EU Member States.

“The transport sector is a growth segment for gas, too, with CNG showing strong performance in Czech Republic and Italy. It remains to be seen how innovative gas technologies, such as power-to-gas, the increased use of renewable gases and the enrolment of CCS influence gas demand in Europe.”

Eurogas is an association representing the European gas wholesale, retail and distribution sectors towards the EU institutions. Founded in 1990, Eurogas currently comprises 46 companies and associations from 21 countries.
